Chickasaw Nation opens first tribally owned CNG fueling station in Oklahoma
The Chickasaw Nation has opened the first tribally owned and operated CNG fueling station in Oklahoma at the Ada Travel Plaza.
The Chickasaw Nation this week opened the first tribally owned and operated compressed natural gas fueling station in Oklahoma.
Gov. Bill Anoatubby said the new CNG fueling station at the Ada Travel Plaza was a "milestone” for the tribe. More than 100 people attended Tuesday’s ribbon cutting ceremony in Ada.
"This is a significant step toward realizing the many benefits which will result from the widespread use of natural gas,” Anoatubby said.
"CNG not only lowers the cost of fuel and maintenance, it is better for the environment, boosts the Oklahoma economy and moves the U.S. closer to energy independence.”
The tribe is converting its vehicle fleet to include more that run on CNG.
Before the opening of the Chickasaw fueling station in Ada, the nearest CNG stations were in Pauls Valley and Shawnee.
Former Oklahoma Transportation Director Neal McCaleb demonstrated the station’s "fast fill” feature during Tuesday’s ceremony.
It allows drivers to fuel CNG vehicles in about the same time needed to fill a gasoline-powered vehicle.
He said he was impressed with the tribe’s willingness to embrace an alternative fuel source.
"The bottom line is the Chickasaw Nation is on the cutting edge of leadership.” McCaleb said. "CNG is good for the nation, it’s good for Oklahoma and it’s good for the Chickasaws.”
